Background:Diflucan is a prescription medicine commonly used to treat infections of the urinary tract, respiratory tract, skin, teeth, joints, and gastrointestinal tract. It has been associated with serious and potentially fatal adverse reactions. Although rare, it can cause life-threatening conditions such as jaundice and pancreatitis, and it is important to inform healthcare professionals about this risk before initiating treatment. The purpose of this report is to provide background information on diflucan treatment and identify potential treatment recommendations for patients. Methods: This is a retrospective chart review. Patients who were prescribed diflucan for fungal infection at the North Michigan Sexual Medicine Center at the age of 18 years or older, as well as those who had been prescribed the drug for a UTI for an upper urinary tract infection were identified. All patients were matched with patients who had received one of the diflucan treatment regimens. Data were obtained by a computer-generated multistate matched-patient cohort. A retrospective chart review of patients was conducted from January 2008 to December 2013 using the IDPSS data set. Patients were matched to patients with patients who had not received diflucan for an upper urinary tract infection. The primary outcome was the proportion of patients who received diflucan treatment. Secondary outcomes included adverse drug reactions, drug discontinuation, adverse event reports, and treatment discontinuation.

Introduction:The use of medications such as fluconazole and diflucan in the treatment of fungal infections has gained recognition in the past. However, the development of new antifungals and the development of new drugs that can be effective against fungal infections are important. The use of these medications has been associated with significant adverse events and drug discontinuation in patients with fungal infection. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) guideline notes the importance of following the recommendations of the American Association of Allergy, Dietetic, and Sexual Health Clinical Practice Guidelines for the management of fungal infection. The AAD guideline recommends that all healthcare providers consider the following measures to reduce the risk of adverse reactions:1) monitor patients closely for any signs or symptoms of infection or any signs or symptoms of drug interactions;2) initiate treatment with the drug in case of a suspected or confirmed infection; and/or 3) monitor patients for any signs or symptoms of infection or any signs or symptoms of drug interactions.1
The use of diflucan is also associated with the development of acute liver injury.1,2In the treatment of fungal infection, the use of fluconazole and diflucan, especially in patients who have been prescribed these medications for recurrent or acute liver injury, has been associated with the development of a condition known as acute liver failure.2,3

The use of fluconazole and diflucan is also associated with the development of acute liver failure.2,3Fluconazole and diflucan are two such drugs that are frequently used to treat fungal infections. However, the use of fluconazole and diflucan in the treatment of acute liver injury is not well studied. This study evaluated the potential risk factors for the development of acute liver injury using the AAD guideline.
